Welcome to the Mira Costa Lady Mustangs basketball program, as we kick off our 2018-2019 season.

As always, we would like to begin by acknowledging the contributions of the four seniors who graduated this past year.  Haley Herdman, Kelli Toyooka, Kira Escovar and Gloria Bianchi all played very big roles in the success of our program.  All four are continuing their education, with Gloria Bianchi playing at Glendale College, and Haley Herdman playing at Loyola Marymount.    We appreciate the contributions of each of these four accomplished young ladies, and know that they will continue to succeed in their new schools.

We are looking forward to an exciting season beginning in mid-November.  While we will be a young team, having lost four starters, we are building around a nucleus of returning starters, junior varsity players moving up, and several talented freshmen.  As always, we set our sights on both challenging for the Bay League title, and making a run in the CIF playoffs.   We have a full slate of tournaments and games for the varsity, as well as the Junior Varsity and Frosh-Soph teams.

Our season will certainly be made more interesting by the scheduled demolition of Fisher Gym in December.  We have plans to practice and play a full schedule, although we will be on the move more than usual.  We look forward to the construction of a state of the art facility in 2019-2020.

We will miss our longtime Junior Varsity coach, Paul White, as he stepped down this past season.  He will be missed both for his skills and for his upbeat and positive demeanor.  In his place, Eric Pagel will assume the JV coaching duties, while Dan O’Farrell will continue to coach the frosh-soph team.

Jeff Herdman is returning for his 5th year with the program, as Associate Head Coach.  In addition, we have added Gail Henderson, who recently moved here from Australia, where she played for many years at the national and professional levels.  We are very excited to add someone of Gail’s skills and experience to our coaching staff.

As always, we would like to thank the many people who contribute to keeping our program running.  Joni Toyooka is head of the Boosters Club, and is joined by Mariel Waller, Ken Susilo and Julie Erich on the Board.  The Boosters Club leads the way in raising the funds we need to run a top-flight basketball program, and we appreciate all of the efforts they put in to help our program.

We are looking forward to a great 2018-2019 season!

Go Costa!
